Playing with Plastic

First-year students are staying warm and busy over IAP this January with a three-week fabrication course focused on thermoforming plastics. We’ve been divided into two teams to design and build installations for the spring open house out of thermoformed plastic and a structural frame material.

The course is an opportunity to become acquainted with the vast array of tools and equipment MIT has, between the fabrication lab and the wood shop in building N-51. We’ve used the CNC mill to make molds, the water jet to cut patterns in our plastic, and will be learning more about wood shop tools and steel welding for our frames. We’re keeping a tumblr to track our experiments with melting plastic and our building process. Check it out! http://mitthermo.tumblr.com/
